Terre
Slow processes and works about soils, land, rootedness, nourishment and home.
Also a tribute to Monte Pisano, nearby wich I grew up.
Terre. 2020, cotton dyed with soil and plants from territories around Pisa and Monte Pisano, natural elements with concave surfaces, raw clay, seeds, approx. 113×130 cm
Terre represents my preliminary steps into natural dyeing and my first experience of working in relation to a place, Monte Pisano, an area near my parent’s home in Tuscany. The intimate
connection I developed towards Monte Pisano nourished a sense of belonging that still constitutes the basis for my current research. By learning natural dyeing, I placed myself in
proximity to the forests and plants, but also with the cycle of water and with my own garden and compost, creating a circular connection between my practice and my surroundings. The
rug is made by crocheting together fabric dyed with plants that grow abundantly in Monte Pisano: chestnut leaves, mallow, wild fennel, olive leaves, savory, elder, walnut husks, blackberry
leaves and wild brambles. The work stems from a sense of gratidute towards the land, as a tribute to the mountain and a recognition of belonging. The whole project embodies
questions concerning soil, territories and how we relate to them, separation from earth, matters of inhabiting, giving and receiving care and recognizing the value of earth. Engaging in
the processes of walking to the forest, gathering, dyeing and crocheting came along reflecting on the need of reviving knowledge about plants and earth.
